| Health was a big obsession in the Victorian era. Charlatans were
able to peddle quack cures without fear of repercussion. Hence Brain
Salt claimed to improve memory, Electropathic Belts and Carbolic Smoke
Balls cured most ailments and certain cigarettes even alleviated the
symptoms of asthma! Nobody seemed to go to bed without first drinking
a hot chocolate made by Fry’s, Rowntree’s or Cadbury’s.
Early fridges and primitive washing machines brought hope to women
that domestic drudgery might soon be a thing of the past. This was
the golden age of the Railways in Britain with beautifully illustrated
posters displaying the merits of spas, seaside towns, cathedral cities
and places of interest. Women squeezed into corsets to have wasp waists
and men discovered the merits of the Gillette safety razor. Sentimentality
was the order of the day with decorative Christmas cards and fancy
love tokens becoming popular. |
