  • What's online?
  • There are over 100,000 images on this website. The Archives comprises in excess of 1 million items within its collection, though, so there are inevitably many images not yet online. If you can't find what you're looking for, please get in touch using the Contact Us page.

  • Why should I register?
  • Registered users can view larger images, save picture searches, create lightboxes and order images online. Account customers can also take advantage of high-resolution image download rights.

  • How are the digital images supplied?
  • Our images are scanned at 300dpi and saved as jpeg's. Every low-resolution preview, and high-resolution image, on this website contains IPTC metadata about the subject, credit and copyright. Usually images are downloaded directly from the site but they can be emailed or sent on a disc if required.

  • How much does it cost to use an image?
  • It depends on how you wish to use the image and whether it is for commercial or personal purposes. We currently order reproduction fees on an individual basis. We already have agreed fees with our regular clients and are happy to discuss future agreements; you can get in touch using the Contact Us page. Please remember to include project details.

  • How do I purchase a print for my wall?

  • Can I visit The Advertising Archives?
  • Due to space constraints we are not open to visitors; if you have any queries or requests please email us or telephone.

  • I have a collection of old comics/magazines/adverts/books/cigarette cards/posters - how much they are worth and where can I sell them?
  • We offer a free in-house valuation service - please see the Valuations section of the site.

  • What is the copyright situation regarding the images on your site?
  • The copyright situation on the images held in our collection varies depending on the actual image and the intended usage. Secondary clearances may be required. All thumbnails and previews are for research purposes only. Please contact us for advice prior to using any of the images on the site.   • Do you supply moving images?
  • No - however we do supply high quality digital grabs from TV adverts.

  • What is a Lightbox?
  • The personal lightbox is like a storage area for images you're interested in. You may create numerous lightboxes based on your projects or topics. We also offer a feature that allows you to email a lightbox to colleagues or clients. To add images to your lightbox, click on the tablet icon under the image. Click on the lightbox button on the toolbar to view and manage your lightboxes.

  • How do I download images?
  • To download images you need to add your chosen images into the basket. To do this, click on the basket icon under the image. This can be done either from the search results or your lightbox. Once you have selected all the required images, click on the basket button on the toolbar to review your selection. If you are happy with your order, click on the "proceed to order" button and follow the online prompts.

  • I have placed an order but haven't received my images, when will they arrive?
  • If you do not have high-res download rights you will not be able to access the images immediately. Once you have placed your order we will contact you and order for usage or ask for additional information to allow us to do so. When we have reached an agreement, we will email you a link to the download area or if you prefer, email the hi-res images directly to you.

  • How can I change my password?
  • When you are signed into the website, click on the "My Account" button. You will need to enter your existing password and then enter your new password and confirm it, press the "Update" button at the bottom of the page.

  • How can I update my account information?
  • When you are signed into the website, click on the "My Account" button. On this page you can ammend your personal details, once altered press the "Update" button at the bottom of the page.
